The Kerikeri rooster
prematurely announced the dawn at 4am
prompting foul thoughts
of paltry Xmas dinners

..who knows where a poem come from
or where it goes

if not captured on the keyboard

or paper scraps left dangling

tantalising thoughts that refuse to die

from a misspent childhood of daydreams

the rest of class forgotten

growing up, growing inward, awareness

that sometimes a word will scream

hear me, write me, read me

or soon I'll pass you by
